Château Branaire-Ducru: the timeless elegance of Saint-Julien
Three centuries of excellence
At the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation, Château Branaire-Ducru has embodied the excellence of Bordeaux fine wines for more than three centuries. Ranked as a Fourth Growth (Quatrième Grand Cru Classé) in the 1855 Classification, the estate continues to captivate wine enthusiasts and collectors around the world with a distinctive style defined by finesse, freshness and elegance.
Combining a rich heritage, ambitious investment and an unwavering commitment to quality, Château Branaire-Ducru stands among the most remarkable properties of the Médoc.
A prestigious history since the 17th century
The story of Château Branaire-Ducru began in 1680 when Jean-Baptiste Braneyre acquired part of the Beychevelle estate. His vision proved correct: the deep gravel soils of Saint-Julien offered an exceptional terroir for the production of great wines.
Over the generations, the estate expanded and the château itself was built in 1824 in an elegant neoclassical style. A few decades later, the property earned its place in the prestigious 1855 Classification as a Fourth Growth.
This distinction recognised the quality and consistency of the wines produced on this exceptional terroir. More than 170 years after the classification, Branaire-Ducru continues to uphold the values that have shaped its reputation.
A new chapter for Château Branaire-Ducru
Since the acquisition of Château Branaire-Ducru by the Maroteaux family in 1988, the estate has pursued a clear ambition: to express its terroir with ever greater precision. Through significant investment in both the vineyard and winery facilities, the property has gradually established itself as one of the most elegant references within the Saint-Julien appellation.
This momentum continued with the appointment of François-Xavier Maroteaux as Managing Director in 2017. Building on the work initiated by his father, he has led an ambitious programme designed to support the estate’s next stage of development.
One of the most significant achievements of this vision has been the creation of a state-of-the-art gravity-flow winery. Gradually brought into operation from the 2022 vintage and officially inaugurated in 2024, this innovative facility features 65 suspended vats and enables highly precise parcel-by-parcel vinification. Each batch of grapes is handled individually to preserve the unique identity of every plot and the character of each vintage.
The fully gravity-fed system reduces mechanical intervention and allows for gentler extraction. This approach helps preserve the finesse of the tannins, the purity of the fruit and the freshness that define the style of Château Branaire-Ducru.
Beyond its technical performance, this investment reflects the estate’s commitment to combining tradition with innovation. Respectful of its heritage while looking firmly towards the future, Château Branaire-Ducru continues to strengthen its position among the leading names of Saint-Julien.
