Château Giscours, Grand Cru Classé of 1855 of Margaux

The story of an iconic Médoc estate

Located in Labarde, at the southern edge of the Margaux appellation, Château Giscours ranks among the most historic and prestigious estates of the Médoc. Its origins date back to the 14th century, yet it was in the 19th century that the estate secured its lasting reputation, crowned by its classification as a Third Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.

Set within more than 80 hectares of parkland, the château benefits from a rare sense of unity that shapes the estate’s expression. This coherence gives Giscours an immediately recognisable identity among the leading names of Margaux.

A family-owned estate guided by committed leadership

Since 1995, Château Giscours has been owned by the Albada Jelgersma family. Under the leadership of Eric Albada Jelgersma, the estate underwent significant restructuring and investment, both in the vineyard and in the winery. Today, continuity is ensured by his children — Dennis, Derk and Valérie Albada Jelgersma — with a clear long-term vision and stable ownership.

Technical and operational management is entrusted to Alexander van Beek, a central figure in the estate’s qualitative revival since the mid-1990s. His approach, rooted in precise parcel selection and stylistic consistency, has helped define the contemporary signature of Giscours wines.

Viticulture and winemaking at Château Giscours

A precise and sustainable approach in service of great Bordeaux wines

Today, Château Giscours combines tradition and modernity through highly precise viticulture. The vineyard extends over more than 100 hectares in a single block — a remarkable feature in Margaux. It rests notably on deep Garonne gravel soils, ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, the estate’s emblematic grape variety.

Furthermore, the property follows a demanding environmental approach, favouring sustainable and reasoned practices:

  • Detailed parcel-by-parcel observation
  • Careful limitation of inputs
  • Soil management with respect for biodiversity
  • Rigorous plot selection

Vinification is conducted with exacting standards in modern technical facilities. Each parcel is therefore able to express its individuality with clarity and precision. Ageing in French oak barrels, carefully controlled, seeks harmony rather than display.

The wines of Château Giscours: a precise interpretation of the Margaux style

The Grand Vin & La Sirène de Giscours: two interpretations of the same terroir

The Grand Vin of Château Giscours embodies a classic and rigorous interpretation of Margaux. It is defined by a fine tannic structure, composed without excess, and by measured aromatic depth that privileges elegance over demonstration. Consistent freshness brings balance and precision, while its ageing potential reflects a structure designed for the long term.

Each vintage therefore seeks coherence and accuracy, always respecting the identity of its terroir.

Alongside it, La Sirène de Giscours offers a complementary expression of the vineyard. This second wine reflects the same winemaking standards and stylistic signature, presented in a more immediate approach. It provides access to the Giscours universe while retaining the structure and elegance that define the estate.

Caiarossa: Tuscan expression guided by the same standards

A great Tuscan wine shaped by biodynamics, intensity and precision

The Giscours ecosystem also extends beyond the Médoc through Caiarossa, an estate located in Riparbella, Tuscany. The project is founded on a precise understanding of terroir, combined with demanding biodynamic viticulture, serving purity and balance.

Caiarossa wines are distinguished by their controlled intensity and natural density, expressing the energy of the Tuscan terroir with rigour and restraint. Margaux and Tuscany thus offer two distinct expressions, united by the same pursuit of precision and authenticity.

Château Giscours, a living heritage oriented towards the future

Today, Château Giscours embodies a modern vision of fine wine: faithful to its history, committed to its environment and open to the world. An estate valued as much for the quality of its wines as for the coherence of its global project, naturally appealing to those in search of meaning and enduring excellence.
